Which authority handles electrical work?

Washington L&I says electrical work generally requires a permit and inspection. Olympia is on its list of self-inspecting cities. Confirm the jobsite is within that electrical jurisdiction before using the City route. Tumwater did not appear on the reviewed list, so L&I is the likely route under the statewide default. That is an inference from the current list, not a parcel determination: verify the address and scope before purchasing.

What about City or County building review?

Building and land-use approval is separate from the electrical permit. Thurston County handles those permits for unincorporated property. A Tumwater UGA address is not necessarily inside the incorporated City. An addition or relocation can involve questions that a same-location panel replacement does not.

When does the utility become involved?

Confirm the electric provider from the customer’s bill or account. If utility-owned meter or service equipment must be disconnected, altered or relocated, ask the utility and electrician to define the coordination. PSE’s construction process applies to a qualifying PSE service project; it does not prove PSE serves every Olympia or Tumwater home.

  1. Locate the exact address and incorporated status.
  2. Confirm the electrical authority and permit holder.
  3. Resolve separate building or land-use review.
  4. Confirm the utility and whether its connection changes.
  5. Agree the inspection and reconnection handoff.
